OPPOSITION VIEW: HULL

ree

Sunderland travel to the East Riding of Yorkshire to face Championship Hull City as part of our preseason schedule. We spoke to David Batte, the Hull City Disabled Fans Association Chair, to get some insight on how the opposition camp are feeling before the new season.

Hull narrowly avoided relegation to League One on goal difference and in 21st place last season after just missing out on the playoffs the season prior, how much of a disappointment was that?

A major disappointment. A poor transfer window last summer and the appointment of Tim Walter led to disaster. Ruben Selles steadied things but still got fired.

What are your goals for next season, will it be a case of avoiding the drop again or do you hope to progress up the table?

Mid table is the aspiration. A new manager with no experience of the EFL and a transfer restriction suggests it will be a challenging season. But the return from ACL injuries of Liam Millar & Mo Belloumi will add significant ability to the squad.

How has your transfer window been going so far and what positions do you still need to strengthen in?

We desperately need to sign two strikers. Our firepower is very limited. A defensive midfielder too but Lundstrum looks to be on the verge of signing & the ex Blades player looks a good fit. The EFL restrictions mean free transfers and creative deals at present.

How have former Sunderland players John Egan and Mason Burstow been faring?

John Egan has been excellent. He slotted in quickly and looks like the likely centre back pairing with Charlie Hughes. Burstow has shown in flashes what he can do but needs a run of games in his preferred position. Just yesterday he was sent on loan to Bolton where hopefully he can find his feet.

What are your thoughts on manager Sergej Jakirovic?

The new manager sounds calm and considered. Hard to judge but initial signs are encouraging.

Who is your best attacking player?

Abu Kamara at present can be a match winner or very frustrating. Capable of real quality but equally his languid style does sometimes grate on fans.

Who is your best defensive player?

Charlie Hughes has fast become a fans’ favourite. Good on the ball and powerful in the air. Stylish all round. Hope we hang on to him.

Finally, score prediction for the game?

1-1. Good luck to Sunderland in the season ahead.
