ROBERTS TO BIRMINGHAM

ree

Sunderland have allowed Patrick Roberts to join Birmingham City on loan until the end of the season.

Roberts came to Wearside when we were in League One and played a massive part in dragging us out of that league. His late, late winner against Sheffield Wednesday in the play-offs is arguably the most important goal in setting us on this current exciting path. Clarke and Roberts on the wings were simply too good for the third division!

In the Championship, Roberts thrived under the guidance of Tony Mowbray, who knew how to get the best out of him and provide an arm round the shoulder when needed. His partnership with Amad was a joy to watch. While Patrick's lack of end product can certainly be frustrating, there's nothing like a mazy Roberts dribble to get the fans off their feet. Also, his assist for Mayenda in the Championship play-off final was the perfect example of his footballing intelligence. If he could produce moments like those on a more regular basis, he would be a Premier League footballer.

Birmingham have got a quality player at Championship level and if they're aiming for promotion, who better to bring that experience to the squad?

Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman said: “Patrick was a catalyst in the success of Sunderland over the past four years. He joined us in League One, believed in what we were doing, where we were going, and immersed himself in our Club, on and off the field. He made a huge impact for us, and with limited opportunities this season, it’s appropriate to ensure he can continue to play regularly throughout the campaign. We wish him the best of luck and thank him for his immense contribution. Patrick will always be able to call Sunderland home, and he will always be welcome at the Stadium of Light.”
