MEPHAM POST CARDIFF

Chris Mepham admitted that his first Sunderland goal was made even sweeter because his mam and dad were in attendance. Chris, you need to bring your mam every week - she’s the lucky charm!

SPECIAL DAY

“It was a special moment, especially because my mum and dad were here for the game. They do try and come as much as possible but it’s a long way from home. They were in the crowd today and ironically my mum actually told me “try and score a goal for me today”. I’m delighted with the goal but most importantly, getting three points. I thought especially in the first half we deserved it. We conceded a soft goal but in the end it was good for me to contribute to the victory.”

DESERVED THE WIN

“I think so. The first 25 minutes was probably as good a period as we’ve had all season, in terms of dominating the game. We literally cut them open with every opportunity and we should have been two or three nil up. Obviously it was disappointing to then go into half time drawing 1-1, a soft goal. But with the reaction in the second half, we knew we’d have to bide our time and in the end I thought it was a deserved win.”

BUILD MOMENTUM

“Naturally there’s going to be questions asked when you go away to Leeds and lose that, and then Hull. Back-to-back losses so it’s important in those kinds of moments to respond as well as possible. In the Sheffield Wednesday game the performance probably wasn’t unbelievable, but we found a way to win. Today I thought the performance was definitely better and it was important to win again. Back-to-back wins now and hopefully we can carry that momentum into an important week for us. Obviously there’s Preston and then Coventry, so two big tests coming up, but we’re in a good place.”

SUCCESSFUL LOAN SPELL

“I’m loving my football up here. It’s been a breath of fresh air coming up here and I feel like the connection I’ve made with my teammates, the staff and the fans has been amazing. For me, the most important thing is helping the team. It’s obviously a young and fairly inexperienced team so first and foremost, that’s the important thing for me to help young lads in these moments. I feel like I’ve given a really good account of myself throughout the season and hopefully I can carry that momentum forward, and get this club back to where it belongs.”

PNE AND COV

“Two massive games. Coventry are in a really good place at the minute, they’ve shot themselves up the table and they’re playing some really good stuff. Preston, we played them earlier on in the season and found that really difficult. Two massive tests coming up but we’re in a great place heading into it. We’ve got lads like Tommy and Romaine and other lads coming back from injury who can really help contribute coming in this really important stage of the season.”
