After activating a promotion clause in his contract, Sunderland have announced the exciting news that Enzo Le Fee has signed a four-year contract.
Enzo becomes our first signing of the summer, and not only that,it also means that we have a new record signing for around £20 million. This knocks the failure of a signing that was Didier Ndong off the top spot as our most expensive signing.
Enzo joined us halfway through the season on loan from AS Roma, and as soon as we seen him play you could tell he was a patch above the rest in terms of quality in the Championship.
He made 18 appearances for the lads, shining in whichever position he played. For the most part he was deputised on the left wing, filling in for the injured Romaine Mundle, and whilst he wasn't in his natural position in the centre of the park, he still delivered.
Even in such a short period for the lads, he had stellar performances in the regular season, causing Boro headache after headache as we beat them 3-2 at the Riverside. And in the play-offs his talent guided us to victory. An assist for Isidor in the first leg with a sublime through ball, followed by another assist in the second leg, planting one on big Dan Ballard's head to send us to Wembley. And then in the final he was integral in the build up for Eliezer Mayenda's goal.
We all saw the emotion he shared following the full time whistle at Wembley, and upon signing he had this to say: “I said before the Play-Off Final that my heart was in Sunderland – I wanted to stay, and this made it the most important game of my life. Together, we did it. From the moment I arrived, I have enjoyed my football, my team-mates, and our supporters. We shared an incredible experience, and now we get to take the next step. There are greater challenges ahead, but we must face them together, and I can’t wait to play for Sunderland in the Premier League.”
Kristjaan Speakman added: “In Enzo, we knew we were acquiring a very high-level player who could be influential in critical moments – the moments that change the outcome of games and seasons. He’s been a big part of our success, so we’re delighted that he’s signing permanently and joining us in the Premier League. Above all else, he’s been a team player, and following our Play-Off Final victory, I think everyone could see exactly what the Club means to him.”
