OPTIONS OVER SUMMER

“We were in touch last season, before the Championship, but the timing was not the best because I was moving to Saudi Arabia so we didn’t match last season. When there was the possibility this summer, I had two or three options to join clubs as an assistant coach or as a head coach. But when I felt the trust Regis and the ownership group had in me, it was easy to choose Sunderland. I felt that it was the right choice and they were pushing a lot to bring me here. We had a common link through football, he was looking for someone talented to be by his side - I don’t know if I am talented enough, I hope so - and I came here just to help him and the club achieve the highest standard it can. I am young but have a bit of experience in football, I’m trying every day to learn and to help. That’s my job.”

CONSTANTLY ADAPTING

“I did so many things in my career that I didn’t expect to do. It was really fast going through the levels, it was not in steps, it was more like an elevator. For that reason, I said before that it is also really important to be lucky in life and in your job. You have to be ready every time, and I think one of my skills is that I am continuously studying, evolving, adapting, in order to be ready for the next challenge I will face. Now I am here, enjoying the atmosphere of the Stadium of Light. That first match was unbelievable.”

RONALDO

“First of all, I think I met the person that really represents the meaning of the word ‘consistency’. He is really consistent in whatever he does. Now, he is really focused on recovery because that is the main part of his job now, at 40. He knows that to perform at the highest level he has to recover well so he spends all day - and also during the night - having ice baths and stuff like that. He knows how much recovery is now important in this part of his life and before, it was about other things. I learned consistency from him.”

RLB BEHIND THE SCENES

“He is exactly the same. Absolutely, exactly the same. He is really good because it makes you calm in order to face any challenge. If you feel too much under pressure, you can’t face the challenge in a proper way so we are working, pushing, studying to try to be ready. He is good in sharing these feelings with us, with the players and with the environment. Every one of us are trying to be like him and it is something I am learning.”

TRANSPARENT RELATIONSHIP

“He is a really calm person and I love speaking to him, he gives you a lot of trust. I appreciate when a person is really honest with you, whether it’s positive or bad, giving you feedback, and he’s really transparent in the relationship with me. He is really welcoming because I can go into his office at any moment and he knows that I am also 100% available 24/7, trying to help. He is a really open person.”
