ENGLAND V JAMAICA MATCH REPORT

ree

As the preparations for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 tournament come to a close, the Lionesses had the perfect send-off to the Euros in Switzerland with a 7-0 win against Jamaica at the King Power Stadium in Leicester.

A striking performance led to two goals for Ella Toone and another for Lucy Bronze which was just enough to keep a clean sheet against the Reggae Girlz, who had a goal ruled out for offside when the score was 1-0 to England.

Just 14 minutes into the second half, Georgia Stanway made it 4-0, followed by Alessia Russo, Aggie Beever-Jones and finally Beth Mead to finish the scoring at 7-0.

The England supporters didn’t have to wait long until Gotham defender Jess Carter slipped into the box and took a shot that was deflected behind the goal by the Jamaican goalkeeper Liya Brooks. However, with an assist from Stanway, Toone catapulted the ball past Brooks into the top corner after just six minutes.

Despite England controlling the game quite comfortably, Kayla McKenna made sure to give England a taste of what her team are made of by making it 1-1, before VAR announced it was offside. Kiki Van Zanten, who won the initial corner to begin with, was blocking goalkeeper Hannah Hampton’s view in an offside position.

Bronze made it 2-0 in the 32nd minute with a tremendous header, soon followed by another from Toone in the 4th minute of added time, to close the first half for England with at exceptional lead.

Wiegman’s side cruised through the second half with 4 more goals. Toone’s almost hat-trick was blocked by Brooks, then struck perfectly by Stanway. The 63rd minute brought Lauren James, Chloe Kelly and Esme Morgan onto the pitch whilst giving Greenwood, Toone and Hemp a rest before the big tournament kicked off at the start of July.

Russo managed to get herself onto the scoresheet after hitting the crossbar earlier in the game, and substitute Beever-Jones collected her 5th goal for England, with only eight national senior caps in her career.

Mead made sure to get herself a goal in the 96th minute before the full time whistle, which left the Lionesses in a good place to start Euro 2025 and aim to defend the trophy.

Your Player of the Match tonight is Ella Toone and she said this: "Alessia finished my perfect hat-trick with her header".
