ARTHUR MASUAKU: FAN VIEW

With reports now claiming Arthur Masuaku is on his way to Sunderlad, we spoke to the lads from West Ham News & Views to discuss their former player...

As a West Ham fan, are you happy to see Arthur back in the Premier League?

I am happy to see him back. He's quite a funny character. Always felt he could of stayed in the Prem once we decided to move him on, but also understood a move to Turkey financially could have been better.

This is an eyebrow-raising signing for many reasons. Are you surprised to see him sign for Sunderland?

It's a signing that has come out the blue. I'm surprised in the sense that I thought he'd never get the move back and suspected he'd bounce around Europe/Saudi, but as mentioned in my first comment I'm happy to see him back. Must feel he has something to prove.

He's actually only 31, it feels like he's been around forever! Do you think he's still got that cutting edge to be a top-flight footballer after some time in Turkey?

Well he came to West Ham at a young age, so that's probably why it feels like he's been around for a while. When he left West Ham I felt a move to Turkey was a bit of a waste as felt like he still had something a club in a top five league could use, but now I'm not sure. Really intrigued to see how he does for Sunderland.

What's his fitness like? And his attitude?

I'll answer both physique and attitude in one as I think they will be a fairly similar answer. Whilst at West Ham he always gave his all and was never happy to not be playing - whatever the reason was. He also has a very good character and will be good for a 'family' type vibe amongst your squad. So I reckon he'd fit into your team for both attributes very nicely.

What are his biggest strengths?

His pace, skill and delivery. Always hard working too, won't slouch.

How about weaknesses?

His defensive ability. He's more of a modern day wingback rather than a full-back. Always played better knowing he had 3 centre-backs behind him. He is very much a winger converted into a wingback. Attacking-wise he will be of huge help to Sunderland, but defensively he will struggle.

Can you see him making a difference in a potential relegation battle for Sunderland?

Most definitely. His offensive output is still very good from the looks of it and of course scoring goals is a very important for every teams, but especially more for teams looking to stay up after being promoted. Just need to see what system he plays in for you guys.

Finally, if he plays against you lot on the opening day of the season what reception will he get from the Hammers fans?

He had his mixed reviews at West Ham, but I think the majority would be happy to see him. His nickname was 'King Arthur' whilst at the club, which shows how much we liked him. Although if he starts eyeing up a shot on goal from an impossible angle, I reckon we'd be trying to put him off...
