WYCOMBE MATCH REPORT

Sunderland conceded a 98th minute goal in a thriller at Adam’s Park with goals deep into injury time for either side.

Sunderland scored within the opening few minutes via a David Stockdale but were pegged back by an Anis Mehmeti strike. Wycombe took the lead via Sam Vokes, but Sunderland responded brilliantly with a Ross Stewart goal. Sunderland’s top scorer scored in the 93rd minute to get his second, but Wycombe snatched a 98th minute equaliser through Jacobson.

With Covid hitting the Sunderland squad, Lee Johnson was forced to recall loanees, and Anthony Patterson replaced Throben Hoffman in goal. Carl Winchester and Lynden Gooch replaced Bailey Wright and Leon Dajaku.

Sunderland made the perfect start with a flowing move, Denis Cirkin’s wonderful cross was met by Ross Stewart, who bullied his man to the ball and smashed a header off the bar which bounced and hit off David Stockdale and in.

Wycombe almost responded moments later, a whipped ball in was met by Sam Vokes but was denied by a magnificent save by Patterson.

The hosts had responded well to going behind and levelled courtesy of Anis Mehmeti who saw his deflected effort fly past Patterson.

Half an hour into the game and it was an even contest, but Sunderland needed to be careful in possession, on more than a few occasions they gave the ball away cheaply.

35 minutes on the clock and Wycombe had turned the game on its head, a corner looped in the air and Vokes beat a hapless Patterson. Sunderland responded magnificently, Elliot Embleton whipped in a delicious ball from the left, and Stewart brilliantly prodded it home.

The lads had a brilliant chance to retake the lead within two minutes of the second half, Alex Pritchard played a wonderful ball through to Corry Evans who was through on goal but denied by Stockdale.

Pritchard had started the second half brilliantly, he picked out Gooch with a wonderful ball, and a better touch would have seen the American through on goal.

Sunderland should have taken the lead yet again; Pritchard’s long-range effort was beaten down by Stockdale and Stewarts header on the rebound was somehow cleared off the line by Joe Jacobson.

Elliot Embleton was a lick of paint away from scoring an outrageous goal, he drove from the halfway line and a curler crashed off the underside of the bar.

Sunderland were dealt a blow as Corry Evans was hit by Patterson who was charging out to clear the ball and was stretchered off and replaced by Jack Diamond. The Sunderland skipper appeared to be knocked out and the stadium went quiet as there was a long delay to see to Evans.

Johnson’s men had done it all apart from score in the second half, Winchester lashed an effort from range which was well saved by Stockdale.

90 minutes on the clock and Stewart had the chance to get the three points, Gooch’s ball in was flicked on by the big Scot, but he couldn’t quite glance it in.

Sunderland finally found the breakthrough into injury time; Gooch picked out Stewart with a lovely ball and League One’s top scorer added his second which was thoroughly deserved.

When it seemed like Sunderland had all three points Wycombe levelled in the 98th minute, Patterson saved, and Jacobson was quickest to snatch it.
