WHO WILL WIN THE WORLD CUP?

Updated: Jul 12, 2023

The World Cup is now in full-flow, and I thought I’d pick out which teams I think could win the competition…

FRANCE

Let’s start with the reigning Champions, France won the world cup back in 2018 and despite all the hype they had a very underwhelming Euros. But Didier Deschamps’ side are still serious contenders, with global superstar Kylian Mbappe being a part of their squad (although they do have several injuries, including Ballon D'Or winner Karim Benzema who isn't match fit). France are really solid all over the pitch and have a healthy balance of youth and experience. Their young centre back William Saliba has lit up the Premier League this season for Arsenal and young midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni has been a regular in Real Madrid’s midfield. They strolled past Australia despite an early scare from the Socceroos (Bailey Wright didn't play sadly). So, as a whole France are a really solid side and a serious contender for the World Cup.

BRAZIL

Now let’s talk about the country that has won the most World Cups (5), Brazil look like serious contenders this year. Their squad looks refreshed with the additions of Antony, Gabriel Martinelli, Vinicius Junior and Eder Militao. Not to mention they still have the likes of Neymar, Casemiro, Marquinhos and of course Ederson and Alisson to choose from in goal. Tite’s side are full of flair, and they are my favourites to win the World Cup. I think this team will be a joy to watch this winter, so if you're looking for a 'second team' to follow I would recommend Brazil.

GERMANY

Following the departure of Joachim Low, Hansi Flick has taken over as Germany manager and has added some new players to the squad. Wonderkids Jamal Musiala, Nico Schlotterbeck and Youssoufa Moukoko have all joined the squad for this World Cup. Not to mention they have flair players like Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane. Again, Germany is another side with a healthy balance of youth and experience. Their squad looks stronger now than it did going into the Euros, so I’d definitely consider Germany contenders.

ENGLAND

Despite our poor nations league performances, I still think I have to put England as contenders. We got to the final of the Euros and we have a good squad on paper. Harry Kane is a world class striker (hopefully he avoids injury), and we have the best selection of right backs in the world. Hopefully our wonderkid Jude Bellingham can feature more this year after an amazing World Cup debut vs Iran. Not to mention we have players like Phil Foden, Declan Rice and Raheem Sterling. As a whole we certainly have a good squad, and we should be competing to win the World Cup.

SPAIN

Luis Enrique’s side are another potential contender to bring home the World Cup. His side is looking very youthful this year with players like Ansu Fati, Pedri, Gavi and Nico Williams just to name a few. They also have experienced winners like Rodri and Dani Carvajal. I think Enrique’s experience accompanied by a young hungry squad gives Spain an outside chance to win the World Cup. I think the young players will want to show their quality and prove a point.

So, as a whole I think Brazil are going to win the World Cup, but there are other contenders to consider going into this tournament. Who do you think will win the World Cup?
