PLAYER RATINGS VS SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY

Sunderland's B-Team put in an abject performance tonight and limped out of the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 loss. Here's how they rated out of 10...

ALEX BASS 5/10: Helpless for Adeniran's thunder strike but sloppy on the ball for Wednesday's second goal.

TRAI HUME 6/10: Worked hard, made a few important blocks and put one dangerous ball into the box which wasn't capitalised on.

CARL WINCHESTER 5/10: Picked up an early booking but, like many players, simply didn't show enough energy or willing to take risks.

BAILEY WRIGHT 5/10: Really slow, although protected in the middle of a back three. Hasn't done much in terms of dislodging the Ballard/Batth partnership.

AJI ALESE 5/10: Looks very raw. Dispossessed for Sheffield Wednesday's second goal, although he will blame Bass' hospital pass.

HARRISON SOHNA 4/10: Barely saw the ball and wasn't able to create anything from wide. Didn't help Alese defensively against Wednesday's pacey attacking play.

JAY MATETE 3/10: Forgot he was playing at times, just far too anonymous. Needs to have more bite if he wants to make an impact on games.

LUKE O'NIEN 3/10: If he is going to play, it needs to be at right back. Not enough quality on the ball and, alongside Matete, completely overran in midfield.

PATRICK ROBERTS 4/10: Very wasteful on the ball and looked frustrated from early in the game. Unable to replicate his Hillsborough heroics from the Play-Off semi-final. Admittedly in a much lower-stakes match...

ELLIOT EMBLETON 4/10: Similar to Roberts, didn't really look interested. The pair could have been the most creative players on the pitch, but they never really got on the ball as Wednesday dominated the midfield and cut off the supply line.

JACK DIAMOND 7/10: Probably the only Sunderland player to come out with any credit. He's not a striker, but made some smart runs and stretched Wednesday's defence with his directness and pace. A shame his teammates weren't up for it, because he showed a lot of energy up top by himself.

SUBS

MICHAEL SPELLMAN N/A: Unfair to rate the young lads given the circumstances. Nice to see youth players given minutes, but highlights the need for further recruitment.

CADEN KELLY N/A: See above...
