PLAYER RATINGS V WIGAN

Updated: Jul 14, 2023

Sunderland’s automatic promotion hopes were effectively ended by a resolute Wigan side who have now done the double over the lads, despite the Latics being in a relegation battle.

Lee Burge (6/10): Faced a few simple shots but nothing of note. Did the simple stuff well and kept his concentration in a quiet game and couldn’t be blamed for their goals.

Luke O’Nien (6/ 10): Moved to right back at the last minute, O’Nien won countless free kicks in dangerous areas. He’ll arguably being beaten physically too easily for Wigan’s first goal, and one of the many players who switched off for their second.

Dion Sanderson (6/10): Had spells where he looked comfortable in possession and showed good range of vision. After Wigan scored, Sanderson did look more shaky as did the rest of the defence.

Bailey Wright (6/10): Replacing Conor McLaughlin at short notice, Wright was very steady and looked like he didn’t have any rust from his spell out of the team.

Denver Hume (5/10): It was good to see Denver back in the side, but he lacked sharpness and was weak in his defending. Didn’t get involved in the attack as most of our play came from the right-hand side.

Max Power (5/10): Kept things ticking over and tidy in possession, but didn’t impose himself and seemed to be second to every ball, playing with no intensity at all.

Josh Scowen (6/10): Plenty of energy and Scowen was very mobile in the middle of the park. Limited by inconsistent passing that hindered our ability to put real pressure on the Latics.

Jordan Jones (7/10): Did a great job of constantly drawing fouls and putting in good deliveries. Guilty of trying to do too much at times, but that’s acceptable when he’s our main attacking threat.

Aiden McGeady (7/10): Set up Wyke’s goal with a beautiful cross. Came close with a free kick and always looked to take on his man.

Jack Diamond (7/10): Diamond’s pace and directness caused Wigan real problems, and their only solution was to foul him constantly.

Charlie Wyke (7/10): Worker hard and ended his goal drought by losing his man and finishing with a cool volley.

Subs:

Grant Leadbitter (6/10): Calm in midfield but didn’t control the game like we know he can.

Ross Stewart (5/10): Almost scored with his first touch but largely anonymous after that header.

Callum McFadzean (6/10): Worked hard and battled well, even if he isn’t the most technically gifted.

Lynden Gooch (6/10): Bright off the bench and instantly tried to create something.
