PLAYER RATINGS V ACCRINGTON

A bizarre game between two teams in poor form, Sunderland thought they had the game won before capitulating in the most Sunderland fashion (twice).

Lee Burge (5/10): Looked full of confidence early on and made a couple of decent saves in the first half. Caught out by poor communication with O’Nien, but helpless for McConville’s brilliant free kick.

Max Power (6/10): Rarely challenged defensively and put us ahead late on with a well-executed counter attack.

Bailey Wright (4/10): Still looks rusty, had an awful second half when Accrington applied any pressure at all.

Luke O’Nien (4/10): Swept everything up at the back and battled well against Dion Charles in the first half. However, football is decided by moments and the standout moment is O’Nien’s lapse in judgement to head the ball into his own net. Looked rattled by the mistake and never recovered.

Denver Hume (7/10): Got forward well and linked up with McGeady on the left. Put a few really dangerous balls into the box which no one got on the end of.

Josh Scowen (5/10): Poor in possession and couldn’t control the midfield after Accrington pulled a goal back.

Carl Winchester (4/10): Picked up an unfortunate early booking and like Scowen, wasn’t able to dictate the game.

Lynden Gooch (7/10): Bright throughout and another very mature performance from Gooch, creating a lot of chances from out wide including setting up Wyke for a brilliant header.

Aiden McGeady (8/10): Looking refreshed after a week out of the team, McGeady was a massive threat to Accrington and always looked to take on the fullback. Picked out Wyke with a good cross for his second goal.

Aiden O’Brien (7/10): Carried the ball well and dropped deep well to pick up the ball.

Charlie Wyke (8/10): Scored two great goals early on, and worked hard for the team throughout. Could have had three or four goals on another day.

Subs:

Grant Leadbitter (5/10): Came on to regain possession and calm the game down. Ultimately failed as Accrington kept attacking wave after wave.

Jack Diamond (7/10): Diamond’s directness caused Accrington problems and his counter attack was instrumental in regaining the lead late on.

Jordan Jones (5/10): Largely anonymous off the bench

Ross Stewart (N/A): Came on as a final roll of the dice
