OTD: ARSENAL 0-0 SAFC

On this day in 2015, Sunderland secured survival with one of the best defensive displays the Emirates has ever seen.

When Dick Advocaat came to Sunderland, he had nine games to avoid relegation from the Premier League. And with one game to spare, he did just that.

In terms of actual chances, the game was pretty low in quality. But it was such a tense game as the stakes were so high.

Costel Pantilimon was outstanding in goal to deny the likes of Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, as Sunderland fought for their lives at the back. In all honesty Arsenal were wasteful in front of goal despite their possession - they had 28 shots in total but only eight were on target.

We had a few chances of our own, although Steven Fletcher (he came on for Danny Graham at half time) failed to beat David Ospina from close-range twice.

Arsenal came closest when Billy Jones diverted a cross onto his own crossbar late in the game. But we stood firm, with Sebastian Coates and John O'Shea absolute giants at the heart of defence.

There were loads of close shaves in our box in the dying stages, but we managed to hold onto the point - reducing Advocaat to tears at the final whistle.

The scenes at full time were amazing as the away end celebrated safety and began to sing "are you watching, Newcastle?" Our survival meant it was down to the Mags and Hull City on the final day of the season. Either Newcastle go down, or Steve Bruce goes down with Hull. A win-win for us.
