OPPOSITION VIEW: SHEFF WED

Whilst our club have obviously given up on this season, Sheffield Wednesday still need a point to guarantee safety so at least there's something riding on this game. We spoke to the guys from The Wednesday Week podcast to discuss how their season has gone...

20th in the league, not mathematically safe but I think most people assume you will stay up, how do you view this season?

It’s been a difficult season. We started the season with Xisco Muñoz who had previously managed Watford to a promotion so on paper he seemed like a decent choice for manager.

However he proved to be one of the worst appointments in club history and presided over the worst league start in club history which saw us with no wins after 10 games and already cut adrift at the foot of the table.

His eventual successor was Danny Röhl who initially interviewed for the position Xisco got. Danny went straight to work outlining his philosophy in team meetings and demanding a level of engagement from the players.

Röhl was loosely linked with Sunderland a few weeks ago, what do you make of him?

It’s been tough for Danny as recruitment was poor so he had to work with what he had. Danny has worked miracles to be in the position we are now knowing a point will secure Championship football for next season which given our position when he took over looked a tall order.

Barry Bannan recently won a player of the year award, is that fair or was someone else more deserving?

Bannan has been consistent this season but without the stats to back this up. He’s only got one goal and one assist this season and from your most influential player that's not a great return. For most fans, they see Will Vaulks as the player of the season as his form in the last few months has been outstanding.

Which Sunderland player worries you the most? Jack Clarke is cheating as he's the obvious answer!

For us, it’s the history that Patrick Roberts has against SWFC. He scored to send us down to League One and then scored for you against us, to keep us there. I really wouldn’t be surprised if he gets his first goal of the season on Saturday.

Where will you need to improve in the summer?

The first job is holding onto the manager - that’s paramount to what we can do. We do have a number of players out of contract and once we know for sure which division we're in, the club will have to deal with those players accordingly. We’ve struggled for a few years to find a player that would get us the 15-20 goals we need.

What's your score prediction for Saturday?

Some fans are feeling confident going into Saturday's game, with us just needing a point for survival without relying on other results. I’m going for 1-1.
