MOWBRAY ON LIONESSES

Tony Mowbray will be attending tonight's game at the Stadium of Light between England and Scotland, and it will be the first time he's seen the Lionesses live. He's spoken about the increased reputation of the women's game, and revealed his player to keep an eye on tonight.

GRASSROOTS

“It’s great for the club and great for the area. It doesn’t surprise me because this part of the country is a very football-mad part of the UK. So young girls should be playing football and do play football. I’ve got three boys and I watched them grow up playing in the grassroots leagues around Teesside and there’s always been girls amongst the boys sides. Some of them catch your eye as they’re pretty determined and strong and technically good."

TONIGHT'S GAME

"Obviously watching the ladies’ team be so successful in the Euros and the World Cup, getting to a final, it’s exciting. I take an interest in ladies’ football, I’m interested in our team and they’ve got some really good results this season. I’m coming to the game tonight and I’m looking forward to it. To be honest Caroline Weir is my type of footballer. She’s like Liam Brady, a silky left foot, but she’s Scottish unfortunately!"

MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS IN RECENT YEARS

"But I’m looking forward to watching them live, I haven’t seen the international ladies’ team live but I’ve followed all their games at the tournaments and I think the improvement over recent years - the positional play and the technique and athleticism of the teams - has been quite amazing recently. It doesn’t surprise me that we’ve got a full house coming to the Stadium of Light to watch them play. It’s quite exciting times.”
