DEPARTING PLAYERS' MESSAGES

As they return to their parent clubs, two of Sunderland's loanees from the 2022/23 season have said their goodbyes via social media.

MICHUT

Recently Sunderland confirmed that Edouard Michut would not be signing permanently for Sunderland, returning to PSG despite a contract clause allowing SAFC to make the move permanent. Kristjaan Speakman was keen to explain that the decision was very much a mutual one, and all parties "agreed it was best to pursue other opportunities at this moment in time".

Clearly a man of few words, French midfielder Michut posted a brief message on Twitter. It simply read: "Thank you for everything". The post was timely, as it had just been confirmed that the rumoured £2.5m option to make the move permanent would not be exercised.

A week ago (before the status of his loan deal was made public) the youngster also tweeted: Hi Sunderland fans, thanks for all the great times and great hospitality. Disappointed we didn't end up at Wembley. I will never forget this season. Thanks to all of you."

JOFFY

Tony Mowbray had discussed with the media the possibility of getting Joe Gelhardt on loan again next season, but with Leeds looking all-but-relegated at this point it seems very unlikely. If they were to become a Championship side next season they'd probably want Gelhardt to stick around at Elland Road.

Gelhardt seemingly confirmed his exit when he posted on Instagram and Facebook: "Thank you to everyone at @sunderlandafcofficial Enjoyed every minute" followed by a series of red and white heart emojis. The club also replied to the post - they said: "Best of luck for the future, Joffy!"

While it didn't work out perfectly for Gelhardt at Sunderland, it would have been interesting to see him line up next to a proper number nine like Ross Stewart. A square peg in a round hole, it was harsh on Joffy to expect him to hold up the ball like Stewart and replicate his goalscoring output.
