JOHNSON ON TRAI HUME

Lee Johnson has spoken briefly on new signing Trai Hume and what he feels Sunderland's newest signing can bring to the table...

COMIC BOOK TALES

“I hope he brings the attributes that we require to play in our team. I think that it’s an exciting signing. I think listening to him and his journey and his story, it’s a real Roy of the Rovers type story."

HUNGRY TO PROVE HIMSELF

“He’s very hungry, he’s very humble as well and he’s very happy to be here. We wouldn’t recruit him unless we believe that we couldn’t mould him into the player he can be but also he has to be able to show those key attributes on a regular basis, which he’s done. He’s done that in men’s football which is good to see.”

RECRUITMENT STYLE

“We really do look into a lot of stuff, it’s not just a case of Bob from down the road has told Stuart Harvey (head of recruitment) that he’s a good player, so we had better sign him. It comes down to hours and hours of collective work based on knowledge, recommendation, data, video, watching that player with the eye, getting to know the family, Zoom calls, talking to him about the philosophy, doing checks on a player’s personality, their social media profiles. There’s so much that goes into it. It’s not just a case of ‘I want that one’.”
