HUGGINS ON CARDIFF DEFEAT

Niall Huggins remained upbeat despite the loss to Cardiff and, like Tony Mowbray, insisted that there are positives to take. He also spoke about his recovery from injury and how it feels to be back on track, making three starts in a row for Sunderland now.

LAPSE IN CONCENTRATION

“I thought we played really well in the first half, we had a lot of opportunities. As the second half went on we kept making good opportunities but we just couldn’t seem to find the one to find the back of the net. Obviously they get one chance from a set piece which is just a lapse in concentration and then the result ends up like that, so it’s unfortunate. We played well but obviously it’s not the result we wanted.”

LOW BLOCK

“I think it’s something we’re going to have to get used to this season. With the fans we have here, a lot of teams come and fancy themselves - especially when they start by sitting off in that low block, it’s a tough thing to break down. But as the season goes on, we’ll work on the training ground at ways to break it down and score more chances.”

NEW SIGNINGS

“We have got a few new lads in who just need to get a bit more game time under their belt. As the season goes on they'll get used to it and hopefully the results will come.”

THREE CONSECUTIVE STARTS

“I feel really good, my body probably feels the best it’s felt in the last two years. Personally for me it’s a disappointing result today but it was probably the best performance I’ve had since coming back into the team. So I’ve just got to take the positives form that and move onto the next game.”

ONTO SHEFF WED

“We’ve got a little bit of a longer rest this week so everyone can have a good reset and take it onto Friday. It’ll be a tough game going there but I think as long as we get after it when we get there, we can get the result we want.”
