HOW WE'VE FARED V STOKE CITY

In the history of our club we’ve faced the Potters 151 times, with a positive winning record having won 66, losing 47 and drawing 35. We’ve put the ball in the back of net 212 times whilst limiting them to 161 goals.

SUNDERLAND 6-1 STOKE - DIVISION ONE - 17.10.1900

Rolling back the years, 121 to be precise, Sunderland hammered the Potters at Roker Park six goals to one, two from Billy Hogg and then one from: Bill Raisbeck, Alf Common, Geordie Livingston and Colin McLatchie. We went 1-0 up early on before Stoke equalised soon after, but over the course of the game our quality shone through and we demolished them. That season we finished 2nd in the league, two points behind Liverpool.

SUNDERLAND 4-1 STOKE - DIVISION ONE - 01.04.1969

1969 was an entertaining year for Sunderland and Stoke matchups, as you’ll soon see the further we go. The first instalment of 1969 classics was a 4-1 win, we were four to the good before the hour mark, and as everyone was seeing out the clock Stoke grabbed a consolation goal after 79 minutes. At home we have Stoke sussed out, but what about when we went down to their place five months later?

STOKE 4-2 SUNDERLAND - DIVISION ONE - 13.09.1969

Same year, different season and we were playing at Victoria Ground in Stoke. It was an exciting game for the neutral, Stoke were two up within the opening seven minutes, scoring in the fourth minute and following it up three minutes later. We reacted by hitting back with our own set of two goals in three minutes, one in the 36th and one in the 39th. Anything they can do we can do better, right? At the break it was two all, but after the second half kicked off, the home side scored after three bloody minutes, and then again in the 73rd minute to kill the tie. This game had a strange affiliation with the number three, they score two in three minutes, so do we and then they score three minutes after the break. As they say, it comes in threes.

SUNDERLAND 4-0 STOKE - PREMIER LEAGUE - 18.10.2011

Now for one from this century, 2011 wasn’t a bad time for either teams really. We were both established Premier League clubs, we had finished the previous campaign in 10th whilst they were three places below. Once at the SoL though we made it look like they were seven places below us in the table. We smashed four past them and kept a clean sheet. Three of our four goals were poor, two deflections and one own goal followed by a touch of quality from Seb Larsson with an inch-perfect free kick.

SUNDERLAND 1-3 STOKE - PREMIER LEAGUE - 14.04.2017

In the last Premier League match between the two sides, we were defeated before the referee blew for half time. To be fair though it was a very entertaining 45 minutes, shame about the other half. Stoke started strong as Marko Arnautovic grabbed two in 20 minutes, with a Peter Crouch header to top it all off just after the half hour mark. We managed to pull one back before the interval through Jermain Defoe. We were poor and ended the day in 19th, one point away from safety. A poor result in a shocking season under Moyes, one to forget.

STOKE 0-1 SUNDERLAND - CHAMPIONSHIP - 20.08.2022

Most recently, Alex Neil's men were coming off a disappointing 2-2 draw to QPR, so they were desperate to bounce back against Michael O'Neill's struggling Stoke. However, Stoke appeared to be in control at the Bet 365 stadium and their physicality was showing. But against the run of play, Jack Clarke sends a long ball over the top and Ross Stewart latched on to it and made it 1-0. The Lads went into half time a goal up. Sunderland were able to see the game out and secure all three points. It was a great win for Alex Neil's side, but little did we know what would happen next...

SUNDERLAND ?-? STOKE - CHAMPIONSHIP - 04.03.2022

Tomorrow's game will be a tasty affair, given Alex Neil's recent history. We're in pretty poor form, but the team have had a full week to prepare for this one and Stoke are not the Premier League side they once were, with a mixed bag of results this season. I'm going for a good 2-0 win for Tony Mowbray's Mackems, with Jack Clarke and Danny Batth both scoring against their former side to send Neil back to Stoke with his tail between his legs!
