SUNDERLAND 4-0 QUEENS PARK RANGERS - FA CUP - 1957
Let’s start with a big victory for the Lads. On the 5th of January 1957, Bill Murray’s Sunderland took on Jack Taylor’s Hoops. Billy Elliott opened the score sheet in the 7th minute, and the Lads were in the lead. Johnny Hannigan doubled the lead in the 10th minute, and Charlie Flemming made it three one minute later. Murray’s men went into half time 3-0 up, and looked nailed on to win the game. Hannigan secured his brace in the 49th minute, and the Lads were 4-0 up. The game ended 4-0 to Sunderland, and Murray’s side advanced to the FA Cup 4th round.
SUNDERLAND 3-0 QUEENS PARK RANGERS - DIVISION 2 - 1979
This was another comfortable win for the Black Cats. It was the 20th of October 1979, and Ken Knighton’s Lads were hosting Tommy Docherty’s QPR. Sunderland won a penalty in the 19th minute, and it was converted by Bryan Robson. Robson doubled his lead three minutes later, when he made it 2-0. John Hawley scored the third in the 28th minute, and Knighton’s side went into halftime 3-0 up. The Lads remained composed in the second half, and the game ended 3-0. This was a good performance from the Lads.
QUEENS PARK RANGERS 3-2 SUNDERLAND - DIVISION 1 - 1990
Now let’s talk about a defeat, but regardless this game was a goal fest. Denis Smith’s Lads travelled to Loftus Road, on the 29th of December 1990. They were facing Don Howe’s Hoops. The deadlock wasn’t broken until the 37th minute, when Danny Maddix made it 1-0 to QPR. Colin Pascoe equalised in the 44th minute, and both teams went into halftime level. Kevin Ball made it 2-1 to the Lads, when he scored a penalty in the 48th minute. Speaking of penalties, Roy Wegerle levelled things up when he converted a penalty in the 63rd minute. Mark Falco won the game for the R’s in the 78th minute, and the Lads came home with nothing. Not the result Smith would have hoped for.
QUEENS PARK RANGERS 2-3 SUNDERLAND - PREMIER LEAGUE - 2011
On the 21st of December 2011 Sunderland travelled to Loftus Road to take on QPR. Martin O'Neill was Sunderland manager, whilst Neil Warnock was in charge of QPR. Arsenal loanee Nicklas Bendtner put the Lads 1-0 up in the 19th minute, and the away end erupted. O’Neill’s men went into half time 1-0 up. Stephane Sessegnon doubled the lead in the 53rd minute, and the Black Cats were flying. But, there was drama still to come. Heidar Helguson pulled one back for the Hoops, and the home side were back in it. Jamie Mackie levelled things up five minutes later, and it looked like the Lads had bottled it. Wes Brown had other ideas, because in the 89th minute he scored the winner, and secured the three points. The fans went home happy, and O’Neill’s men went into Christmas on a high.
SUNDERLAND 2-2 QUEENS PARK RANGERS - CHAMPIONSHIP - 2022
Alex Neil’s side were coming off a big 3-2 away win against Bristol City, a win that introduced a new strike partnership. They hosted Michael Beale’s QPR at the Stadium of Light, on the 13th of August and needless to say it was dramatic. Ross Stewart made it 1-0 in the 31st minute, and the Lads were off the mark. His new strike partner Ellis Simms made it 2-0 nine minutes later, and the Lads went into halftime 2-0 up. All looked set on a Sunderland win, but late drama came in the Second half. Ilias Chair was lucky to be on the pitch after putting his hands around Lynden Gooch’s neck. The Moroccan then scored a free kick in the 87th minute to make it 2-1. Right as we thought things couldn’t get any more crazy, QPR goalkeeper Seny Dieng equalised in the 90th minute, and the Lads had bottled it. It was a freak situation, but it was enough to secure a point for Michael Beale’s men. Alex Neil’s side left the pitch disappointed.
