HOW WE FARED V SHEFF UTD

Before the game later today, we have decided to look back on our past matches against Sheffield United, including one of the most memorable nights in Stadium Of Light history.

SHEFFIELD UNITED 2-1 SUNDERLAND - LEAGUE ONE PLAY OFF SEMI FINAL - 10.05.1998

After finishing the normal season a mere point away from automatic promotion, and only losing twice in the last 19 league games we were heading into this tie disappointed with the finish of the season, but optimistic at the chance of promotion still within our grasp. That optimism was met by a lovely volley on the edge of the box thanks to Kevin Ball after just 17 minutes, but as the game went on The Blades grew more and more into the game, as well as the home crowd. Just before the hour mark Sheffield had their goal, and then we allowed a second. This was a silver lining though as without that defeat, we might not have had one of the best nights in the Stadium of Lights history.

SUNDERLAND 2-0 SHEFF UTD - LEAGUE ONE PLAYOFF SEMI FINAL - 13.05.1998

After the 2-1 defeat we had the home crowd for the second leg to try to rally the team to a playoff comeback, and that’s exactly what happened. Over 40 thousand fans packed the SoL and saw a Sheffield United own goal forced by Allan ‘Magic’ Johnson, followed by a Super Kevin Phillips tap in that led us on our way to Wembley, where we lost to Charlton in the final.

SUNDERLAND 1-0 SHEFF UTD - FA CUP QUARTER FINAL - 07.03.04

In another memorable match against The Blades was in the Quarter Final of the FA Cup at the Stadium Of Light. The SoL was filled with over 37 thousand fans and we all enjoyed a Tommy Smith 15th minute goal. All the credit for the win should go to Mart Poom though, who had a blinding performance between the sticks maintaining his clean sheet making numerous game-winning saves.

SUNDERLAND 1-2 SHEFF UTD - CHAMPIONSHIP - 09.09.2017

As part of our brief pit stop in the Championship on home turf we were beaten 2-1, falling to a debut brace from Clayton Donaldson. We managed to get a consolation goal via Jack Rodwell but like Rodwell’s time on Wearside, it was pointless.

SHEFFIELD UNITED 3-0 SUNDERLAND - CHAMPIONSHIP - 26.12.2017

We went down to Bramall Lane on boxing day three months later and were well beaten, suffering a 3-0 defeat. We ended the day in the bottom three, whilst The Blades rose up to sixth. No good.

SHEFF UTD 0-1 SUNDERLAND - LEAGUE CUP - 25.09.2019

In the most recent of matches against Sheffield United we actually won, despite being in two divisions lower. A Max Power screamer after nine minutes was enough to book our place into the next round, as we saw out a 1-0 win at Bramall Lane.

SHEFF UTD ?-? SUNDERLAND - CHAMPIONSHIP - 17.08.22

Who knows what this tie has in store for us tonight, it is without a doubt our biggest challenge of the season so far. And with Daniel Ballard picking an injury up last Saturday against QPR we'll see a new face in the starting back line. Sheffield look like strong candidates to push for promotion so it will be good to see how the Lads perform tonight, with Simms and Stewart up top and firing there doesn't seem a better time for us to play, so I'm going to go for another 3-2 win on the road. Haway The Lads.
