HARVEY MCWILLIAMS

During the Lincoln game recently, there was a minute’s applause on eighteen minutes in memory of the life of Harvey McWilliams of Darlington, an eighteen-year-old fan who died in tragic circumstances shortly before Christmas. There was also a photo of Harvey on the big screen, and his mam, dad, and brother in the Roker End were moved by the appreciation shown by fellow fans and the club, and the compassion shown by Chris Waters in helping arrange the tribute.

A talented footballer, Harvey had been on the books at Darlington, and had most recently joined Exeter Panthers after moving to there to study at Exeter University. A popular young man, several thousands of pounds were donated to help with funeral costs, with the excess going to mental health charities. Shildon-based ManHealth is a Community Interest Company providing peer support for men suffering depression and other mental health issues, and they are doing a walk later this year to raise awareness and funds. ManHealth’s Paul Bannister says that the walk will now be the March for Mental health in loving memory of Harvey, and their aim is to walk over 130 miles in six days, visiting seventeen football grounds on the way. Beginning on April 13th in Bedlington, they’ll reach the Stadium of Light on the 15th, Good Friday, when we’re at home to Shrewsbury, before ending at Middlesbrough on the 18th. Donations can be made by visiting ManHealth: March for Men-tal Health in memory of Harvey McWilliams (enthuse.com) or look out for them on the day.
