GOOCH POST WYCOMBE

Updated: Jul 21, 2023

Lynden Gooch reflects on Sunderland's 3-3 draw with Wycombe Wanderers...

DRAW

"I think most people, if you said before the game, take a point and move on they would have snapped your hand off."

BITTER PILL

"Considering the way we played and the opportunities we created, scoring late on to take the lead, it's a bitter pill to take. Conceding so late was so disappointing."

GOOD FOOTBALL

"We created some great opportunities and I thought we played some really good football, even though you come here and they are back to front as quick as you like. That's difficult but when we got the ball down we created some good opportunities."

GOOD GAME

"They defended well and the goalkeeper made some good saves but we are disappointed we didn't get it over the line. It was always going to be a good match between two teams that have been battling it out for the past few years - we've had tough games against them."

LOAN RECALLS

"We have a good squad and had to bring a few lads back [from loan], full credit to them, especially Jack [Diamond] coming on today and Patto [Anthony Patterson] doing brilliant in goal. It was good to see."

MORE GOALS

"But we should have scored more goals and we know that. They had some brilliant defending to be fair, Jacobson cleared a few and [David] Stockdale made some good saves. We are disappointed we didn't put them to bed, really."

FILL GAPS

"Even on this great run we've had people playing out of position, myself, Leon [Dajaku]. We have had loads of players playing all over the park and trying to fill the gaps. Saturday was like that. We all understand what the manager wants from us so when you slot in you just have to do the best you can. Obviously I was playing a bit further forward on Saturday rather than the past six weeks or so. Wherever the manager puts me on the pitch I will try and do my best for the team."

MOMENTUM

"Of course we were disappointed that the [Fleetwood] game was off last week and we want to keep that momentum going, keep playing games and keep putting points on the board. We have been in recent years trying to play catch-up and obviously that hasn't worked. Hopefully we can keep getting points on the board and keep our games on."

COVID

"But you don't know what is going to happen day-to-day when we are all getting tested. We just have to be as careful as we can and make sure we can keep the games on. It [Covid] is one of those things that you don't know where you're going to get it from, you can get it at any given time so you just need to be as careful as possible."

READY

"You have to be ready for anything and week-to-week. You have to be ready and try and fill in where you can."
