Another game. Another hapless performance. The rot continues as this Sunderland side ploughs new depths of ineptitude. To lose at home to the bottom team in the division was yet another painful humiliation following the Bolton fiasco.
Almost 40,000 people turned out yesterday, fired up to see the return of Jermaine Defoe, only to be greeted with the news that he was warming the bench, along with exciting new signings Jay Matete, Patrick Roberts and Jack Clarke. Instead, acting manager Mike Dodds, in his wisdom, had elected to play the same team that had just delivered arguably the worst result in the club’s history! They must have been asking themselves, ‘what do we need to do to get dropped?’
After an utterly incompetent first-half performance, Defoe and Matete were finally brought on in the 72nd minute with the game long gone and the pre-match excitement completely squandered.
Speaking last week, Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman, said there was no hurry to bring in a new coach. But these embarrassing performances prove otherwise. It is clear this group of players has stopped trying and need a royal rocket up the backside. The man for that job is Roy Keane. We need him in now to sort out this shambles before it’s too late.
