FOUR DARK HORSES

Every season there are always some players already at the club who unexpectedly make a big impact. Last season it was Trai Hume, the season before that it was Ross Stewart, and if you want to go even further back Charlie Wyke. So, here are four players that could make a big impact next season.

NIALL HUGGINS

Let’s start with Sunderland's forgotten man Niall Huggins. Ability has never been the issue with Huggins, unfortunately he’s just had terrible luck with injuries. However, he came off the bench at Kenilworth Road and you'd hope that with a full pre-season campaign ahead of him he'll be available next season. The former Leeds man has rapid pace and that’s something our other fullbacks don’t have. If Huggins can remain fit for the majority of the season, he could become a regular - especially considering his ability to play either on the right or left. At 22 years old, he has one more year to prove himself on Wearside so this is a make or break season for the fullback.

JOE ANDERSON

Another player I don’t hear many people talking about is Joe Anderson. Mowbray hinted at a potential loan move for the 22 year old, but if he stays an opportunity might present itself. He is a left footed ball playing centre back, and all it takes is a few injuries for him to be called upon. He could be next season's Trai Hume.

JEWISON BENNETTE

Bennette has been on Wearside for almost a year now and I’m expecting to see more of him next season. If Jack Clarke leaves the club this summer, Jewi could be his replacement. Every time I’ve seen the youngster play he’s shown skill, passion and electric pace. I think he will score his fair share of goals next season as long as he's entrusted with at least a handful of starts in the Championship.

ISAAC LIHADJI

Signed from Lille in January, Lihadji is perhaps the biggest dark horse in the Championship. The Frenchman is a former Golden Boy nominee and he could be a huge player for us next season. Apparently Barcelo wanted the Frenchman before he broke his leg a few years ago. The winger has now had six months to settle in and get to know the team, so communication shouldn’t be much of an issue. I also expect he won't be isolated in the dressing room, due to the ever-increasing French contingency that has formed. He was originally talked up as a potential replacement for Amad and I’m excited to see what he brings. At the very least he should be good competition for Roberts.
