DIGITAL DILEMMA

Certain things in life tend to adapt and change as technology progresses, in order to suit society's needs and aspirations.

Things like the TV for example, it was once an unearthly box, sat conspicuously in the corner of your living room. But as times changed, and technologies advanced, the TV became a neater, contemporary piece of furniture; people didn’t want a big boxy… err… box, with a small screen; they wanted sleekness, and modernness. Technological advances paves the way for what society wants…

And now, it`s the same with season cards. They are going digital… since the club announced this transition, there has been a mixed response.

I can definitely see the advantage of having a system like this. According to, “Mobileuk.org”, over 95% of the adult population uses a smartphone device in the UK. There are many transactions we make through our phones nowadays. Bank cards and bus tickets to name a few- and it is definitely a more efficient way of going about things.

Would this solve the queues outside the turnstiles on a matchday? All you would need to do would be to swipe the scanner and you are in!

This idea meets the aspirations and needs of a wannabe efficient and organised way of life! It also provides a safer and more secure way of going about thing, and decreases the chance of fraud, which can only be viewed as a positive move forward for the club.

It isn’t all good news though. What about the remaining 5% of the UK`s population who don’t have one of these devices?

Will they just be left to watch the game through that, “DAZN” thing that proposes to take over EFL TV rights and end the 3pm blackout… that TV rights deals sounds quite good actually…

But not for the people who would rather be at the game! However, the club has stated that is will give all fans who require help with regards to this a season card.

Additionally, the club has also stated that those who may struggle with the technology switch up can get support from sessions held at the Beacon Of Light. Having said this, it still provides a hindrance and an inconvenience to all those in that position.

Having said that though, this idea does mainly suit society`s needs and aspirations to be a more efficient and organised one. It is just that through doing so, it excludes a certain minority group in society.

After all, there are still some who have those big boxy… err… box televisions…
