DEFOE TO RETIRE?

News has broken that Jermain Defoe is considering hanging up his boots “imminently”. That would leave Sunderland with just one fit striker, with seven League One games left (and play-offs).

Despite Defoe’s lack of goals since re-joining the lads, it would be a massive loss if the 39-year-old were to give up so easily. Defoe has always been praised for being extremely professional, and as we get to the business end of the season, it would be useful to have his experience in and around the squad.

Defoe reportedly trained with the first team as usual yesterday, and reportedly has not discussed his position with the club’s hierarchy. He is yet to score in his second stint on Wearside, but with the business end of the season approaching quickly, surely his experience is a useful asset to have in and around the young squad.

The former Spurs man has dipped his toe into punditry this season, appearing on Sky Sports, and a career in the media seems the most likely option in the future. However, with Nathan Broadhead’s fitness proving to be unreliable, we can only hope that Defoe delays his decision until the end of the season.
