This morning on Talksport, Defoe confirmed what was already rumoured – the club have made contact with the 39 year old striker and he has confirmed it is an option, mentioning Sunderland by name. Despite revealing very little, Defoe also stated that he has a few other options, so at this stage all we can do is hope that we can tempt the experienced striker with an emotional move back to Wearside.

Its no secret that Defoe keeps himself in great physical condition, training hard and rigidly adhering to a vegan diet. In the interview he expressed his desire to continue playing, stressing that he is training as he always has. With Broadhead injured, its crucial that should we sign Defoe, he should be able to hit the ground running, even if it's from the bench.

"It's just about being honest with yourself, I did a full pre-season and I thought 'I feel good'. I didn't pick up any niggles, I've been doing double sessions. So I've been doing the things I've always done.
