On the eve of the Southampton game let’s take a look at some of the things that happened this week that you might have missed…

ST MARY’S ON FIRE

The new home of the Loch Ness Drogba almost went up in flames on Wednesday, with a nearby building setting alight just across the road from St Mary’s. The fire resulted in many firefighters and a closure of the surrounding area for safety purposes, leading to Southampton’s Tuesday night game against Preston to be postponed. There were some Sunderland fans that were worried that our game could be postponed but yesterday the stadium staff were cleared to return to work so we should see the game go ahead as usual.

OLE IN?

There were some rumours earlier this week that former Manchester United player and manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, has apparently thrown his hat into the ring for the vacant Sunderland head coach job. I’d be a bit sceptical with this one, but I think if we were to get him in it would be a really good appointment, and better than most people would initially think. A man who has worked with legends of football and won trophies. Most importantly, we could keep the dream alive of one day seeing Amad back in a Sunderland shirt!

EVANS RETURN DELAYED

Our skipper, Corry Evans, was recently pictured back in training with the lads with a return to action expected perhaps even on Saturday but that has been pushed back following a minor setback. When speaking on the matter Mike Dodds had this to say:

“Corry rolled his ankle this morning, it’s nothing major. There was a discussion about him playing or not playing but they just feel they are going to give him a couple of days. Corry isn’t playing on Monday but it’s more of a precaution than anything based on the fact he has been out for a period of time.”

BALLY NOMINATED FOR FREEDOM OF SUNDERLAND

Sunderland legend Kevin Ball has been nominated to receive the ‘Freedom of Sunderland’. Next week Sunderland’s City Council Cabinet will consider recommending the nominations to a future full council meeting for agreement. Should he receive the nomination, Bally will join an ever growing list of SAFC alumni with the Freedom of Sunderland, joining the likes of Jill Scott, Steph Houghton and Gary Bennett who all received the award last year as well as others.
