BIENVENIDO BENNETTE

Today we have announced the long awaited signing of 18 year old Costa Rican international Jewison Bennette. He signs on a four year deal from C.S. Herediano with an option for a further year. Welcome to Sunderland Jewison!

Bennett is traditionally a winger, and has six international appearances for Los Ticos, which included an assist to Joel Campbell which sent them to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The leftie holds the record for being the youngest capped Costa Rican, and hopes he can impress in England to cement his place for the World Cup this Winter.

He will wear the number 19 shirt and the club announced he will join in training tomorrow, so there are very slim chances he’ll start on Saturday against Norwich obviously but it would be nice to see him on the bench. One thing we must do is get behind the lad, imagine moving continents to play football at only 18, even if he doesn’t hit the ground running we need to all show him some faith.

Upon joining Bennette said: “I’m very happy and I’m looking forward to taking on this new challenge. I’ve come here with the aim of helping the team as much as I can. When you see the Stadium of Light and this huge fan base, it gives you more motivation and desire to work hard day-to-day and give your all.”

Alex Neil added: “He is a huge talent and an international player. Our model is to unearth the best young talent and try to develop them, so for everyone it is very exciting. We need to be patient and allow him time to acclimatise to a new country and learn the language – he is certainly one for the future.”
