Lynden Gooch has described his Wembley winner in the EFL Trophy Final as the best moment of his career.
“It feels amazing. I’ve been at Sunderland since I was ten years old, so it’s a massive day for myself, my family and obviously the club. It’s been a long time since 1973. It’s the best moment of my career by far. Coming through the academy and being able to bring success to the football club is amazing.”
“It’s the perfect day. It would have been better with fans, but we’ve waited so long for a bit of success. There’s been a lot of pain these last few years, but this is something we’ll savour. We played them twice in League One last year, and I’m sure they were really disappointed to go down on points-per-game. They’re probably a League One team at the end of the day, and we knew it was going to be tough. It’s a cup final and anything can happen. It was a tough game, and fair play to them, they played really well. It’s massive. You get emotional about it, and today will be massive for everyone in the city.”
