ANDERSON LEAVES ON LOAN

Sunderland have confirmed that Joe Anderson has joined Shrewsbury Town on loan.

The defender struggled to break into the first team since arriving on Wearside in January, and has now signed for Shrewsbury on a season-long loan.

He will join up with former Black Cats Carl Winchester, Aiden O'Brien and Tom Flanagan, as well as his former Everton teammate and ex-Sunderland defender Morgan Feeney.

Anderson said: "I'm absolutely delighted to join the club! I know a few of the lads already who have joined recently and everyone speaks highly of the club. Speaking to the gaffer at Sunderland and Micky (Moore, our director of football), it definitely the right club for me to come to for the next stage of my career. I want to get clean sheets. I'm composed on the ball and I like to start attacks. I see myself almost in that role between the defence and midfield where I can step in, I can start attacks and I can be someone who can settle the game down and control the pace of the game. Obviously I can head the ball and tackle and defend, this just brings that extra element of being able to connect the midfield the defence and the forwards all together. Sometimes even missing out the midfield and playing those balls through. That's how I'd describe myself."

Kristjaan Speakman added: “Joe has settled within the first-team squad since his arrival in January and now is the right time for us to seek an opportunity for him to play regularly. This move will allow him to continue his development in a competitive senior environment and we hope that step allows him to return at some point and challenge for a place in our team. We look forward to supporting his progress closely throughout the forthcoming campaign and wish him well."
