Despite there being no Sunderland action on the pitch for almost two weeks now, there are some things going on around Sunderland. Here are some stories that you might have missed…

MATETE RECALLED

Jay Matete joined Oxford on loan in February, but his short term loan deal has been made even shorter, as the midfielder has came back to us having undergone minor knee surgery that has ended his season early. He is expected to make his return ahead of pre-season, but it is a shame that another one of our players has gone out injured. Some of us had thought he could have put a shift in for us at some point this season too.

Speaking on the injury, Kristjaan Speakman said:

“Jay has had to navigate a really challenging season and after working hard to return to fitness in December, this news comes as a disappointing blow. After assessing his injury earlier this week, we had an honest conversation and agreed that immediate surgery provides the best long-term outlook for his progression. It is a testament to Jay’s character that he is already focussed on returning ahead of pre-season and making an impact, and we look forward to supporting him fully in that process.”

DANNY ROHL LINKED WITH HEAD COACH VACANCY

Sheffield Wednesday boss, Danny Rohl, has been linked with us recently. Despite being in the relegation zone with Sheff Wed, Rohl is supposedly one of the more exciting managers/coaches in the division so it wouldn’t come as much of a surprise that we would be keeping tabs on him. He’s also only 34 years old, which makes him the youngest manager in the EFL, so he’s young and progressive which we all know the club are in favour of.

In the past, former Sheffield Wednesday managers were signed on to rolling contracts, lasting one season at a time, which would have Wednesday fans worried, but it seems that Rohl actually signed a contract that would keep him at Hillsborough until the end of the 2024/25 season, that was according to a claim in Germany that hasn’t been disproved. Regardless, from a Sunderland point of view, he does seem like a manager that is achievable, whether Sheffield stay up or not. If the news about his contract is true, then you would think the compensation fee owed to the Owls wouldn’t be that high, and if they go down he may even have a clause in his contract would require no compensation.
