The Crucial Two

Updated: Aug 10, 2023

Reece James reckons that the central midfield partnership of Lee Cattermole and Grant Leadbitter could be crucial to our promotion hopes. “The composure the two of them bring as a partnership when you go to places like Bristol Rovers, where they're bang up for it because of the size of our following, is a really big deal,’’ said James. "The experience they’ve got is massive and they only help out all of us that are behind them. Their talking is massive for us and the protection they give us, either in the air or on the floor, is great. And it’s just as good when they are on the ball because they’re so composed, they take the pressure right off. They take the sting out of the game. Whenever we play at other grounds they've sold their ground out and I think with the following we come with, teams are bang up for it. It's a different experience for them and it's always a challenge. Everyone's always bang up for it when we play them and it's a challenge we've got to deal with and be up for it themselves. We've got to match them, if not be better (motivated) than they are. That's what we're starting to do and it’s an important time of the season. We've just got to make sure we keep plugging away and get the wins.

He also believes that clean sheets are the way forward: “It's been hard that we haven’t had many clean sheets lately. We went on a good spell and we sort of dropped off from there. It (keeping clean sheets) is something we take pride from in every game. I think you can see the disappointment in everyone when we do concede. No one wants to concede goals, especially the back four. But Saturday was massive for us. There was big togetherness from us all from the front all the way to the back. I think we've got to take confidence from the last two results. We've taken six points out of six from it, which is massive. We don't want to keep looking at other teams, but looking at the other games, Barnsley have dropped points in both games, which is good because we've gained momentum back over them. As long as we do our job, that's the main thing and we've just got to keep our focus on that, rather than looking at anyone else in the league. If we do our business with the results, the rest of it should take care of itself. It is significant when you've got teams breathing down your neck but we've just got to focus on our own results, especially at this time of year. If you start looking at other results, that's where panic starts to set in and if you look too much into it, you can take your eye off your own performances, and I think that's the main thing – we've got to keep focussed, keep plugging away, keep getting as many wins as possible from now until the end of the season.’’
