Deadline Done

Updated: Aug 8, 2023

OK, so the transfer window is closed and people can stop having meltdowns and go back to their normal lives.

Here’s a breakdown of where we are at:

10.20: We have agreed a deal with Wigan to bring Will Grigg to Sunderland for £3m, rising to £4m, doubling our previous bid of £1.5m.

8pm: We have brought in Kazaiah Sterling on loan from Spurs. Jack Ross had this to say about the striker: “Kazaiah has risen to the various challenges he’s faced throughout his development in youth football, and he arrives at Sunderland ready to prove himself again. Tottenham have a world-class squad and despite his age, he has forced his way into it on more than one occasion, but now he has the opportunity to come here and test himself by playing senior football on a regular basis. He’s athletic, good on the ball and has an eye for goal, so he has all the attributes at his disposal to ensure he’s a success during his time at the Stadium of Light.”

10am: Lewis Morgan loan deal until end of the season confirmed. “My game is based around scoring and creating goals, but I obviously also try to work hard for the team, and that is the most important thing.Something special is happening at the club this season, and hopefully I can contribute to that.” Jack Ross, added: “I worked closely with Lewis for several years during my time at St Mirren, and his progression at that time was terrific.I’ve been very open and honest with him about how hard he will have to work to get into our team, as we have some very good players, but he’s welcomed that challenge. He’s still young but he’s an exciting player, and I know exactly what he’s capable of."

9am: Ethan Robson is joining Dundee on loan, which is a shame because he’s due a chance at Sunderland, but I guess we are overstocked with central midfielders right now and he needs game time.

6am: Lewis Morgan’s loan from Celtic is done. He’s had a medical and will be announced today.

Wigan have turned down our fifth bid of £1.25m, plus add ons, for Will Grigg.

Donny have turned down our £1.25m bid for their striker, John Marquis.

We’ve had loan bid accepted by a PL team for another striker, thought to be Bournemouth's Sam Surridge. Medical today. He has turned down offers from five other clubs in higher divisions to come to Sunderland. He will be the “second striker.”

We have contingency plan if we fail to land Grigg or Marquis to complement the PL loan striker.

We were never in for Ched Evans, despite the twitter meltdown about his past.

Bryan Oviedo could be off to WBA, which would reduce overall wage bill by 25%.
