On the face of it, things may be all quiet on the news front, but ALS understands that there’s plenty going on behind the scenes and that there might well be movement from the EFL, in terms of approving the takeover, by the weekend.
Meanwhile, John O’Shea reckons that the decision to hand Bali Mumba the captain’s armband on his debut against Wolves was a symbol of the club’s brighter future. O’Shea said: “Bali has come into training with the first team during the season and done very well. He is a 16-year-old who has come into that environment and not looked out of place, got plenty of knocks and kicks and tackles and bounced back up and showed a good attitude. I said to Robbie he would be the perfect example of what this club’s future is all about. It was a symbolic moment. That’s the future of the club, and lads like him really need to be looked after. Keeping the home-grown talent and bringing them through and developing them has to be the model they need going forward.”
In other news Denver Hume has spoken of the pride he felt upon making his debut against Wolves in the final game of the season. Hume was joined by fellow youngsters Luke Molyneux and Bali Mumba who also made their bows for the Lads: “It was a very proud moment me because I’ve waited a long time for it,” explained Hume. “I didn’t expect it to come this season, so I was really pleased just to get out there. It’s been a long season and I’ve played a lot of games with the under-23s. To end the season on a high by making my debut at the Stadium of Light is something that I’ll never forget. It gives me a massive boost heading into the summer as I’ve now had a taste of where I want to be. Hopefully, I can come back for pre-season and really kick on, and play a few more games.”
Meanwhile, the SAFCSA's George W Forster, 91, who was last month awarded Supporter of the Year, has been given a “Football Fairness Package” from PlayOJO, the fair casino which is challenging the online casino market to be fair and transparent, which includes lunch and box seat tickets to watch the FA Cup Final in style plus the chance to meet ex-Sunderland midfielder and club legend Julio Arca. Arca said: “Despite back-to-back relegations George has remained a dedicated supporter of the club, and it’s this level of commitment that will help the team continue during difficult times.”
George added: “Sunderland has had a tough time of it over the past couple of seasons, but I will continue to support them through thick and thin. I’m thrilled to be heading to Wembley this weekend in what will undoubtedly be a chance to watch a great game of football. It will be a trip down memory lane for me – albeit under very different circumstances – as I saw Sunderland win at Wembley in 1973 when they became the first Second Division team to lift the Cup.”
