U21S 4-2 VS IPSWICH
Sunderland under-21s earned a second consecutive home win after beating Ipswich Town 4-2 in the Premier League 2 last night.
Charlie Dinsdale earned the Lads the lead, before Trey Ogunsuyi doubled it with a close range finish and Felix Scott got the third with another close range strike. In additional time the Black Cats got a fourth when Kay Munyakazi curled the ball into the top corner. Ipswich Town did earn a couple in reply when Corbin Mthunzi headed home just before the break and Josh Pitts scored straight after the break.
The young Black Cats went into the game off the back of a 5-1 defeat to Brentford in the Premier League 2. The Wearsiders sat 13th in the table with three points, after winning 5-1 against Nottingham Forest in the opening game of the season, while Ipswich also went into the game with the same record from the opening two games.
Despite an even start, Charlie Dinsdale earned The Lads the lead when a driven cross from Felix Scott on the left flank found the midfielder at the back post who passed it into the empty net with 20 minutes played.
Sunderland did double their lead moments later. Felix Scott's driven cross found Ogunsuyi at the front post who only moments before had a similar chance that was well saved by Alex Noonan.
Sunderland had a chance saved off the line before earning a deserved third when Felix Scott blasted the ball into the roof of the net from Dinsdale’s cross and earned a fourth in additional time of the first half. Dinsdale cut inside from the flank and laid off Munyakazi who curled it brilliantly into the top corner. However, even later in additional time, Ipswich got a goal back when Mthunzi headed home from a corner.
With a minute played of the second half, the visitors earned their second. Josh Pitts beat his man inside the box before slotting it into the corner to keep the Tractor Boys in it. And with the visitors pushing to get back into the game, Sunderland struggled to have chances. It took until the final 15 minutes before they had a shot at goal after the interval, when substitute Ben Kindon headed over from a corner.
Despite the pressure, Ipswich struggled to find many clear cut chances, with their best chances after the goal being saved by Cowan onto the post from Jokubas Mazionis header and a late one-on-one being blazed over the bar by Shakil Nicolaou.
Sunderland U21s next play Norwich next Friday at Eppleton CW as they look to go three unbeaten at home.
