SOULÉ ON THE RADAR

In recent days, Sunderland have been linked with a move for highly rated Argentine winger, Matías Soulé. The 22 year old, who can play across the front line, bagged 7 goals and achieved 7 assists last season in all competitions with Italian giants AS Roma. His creativity and ball-carrying ability fits the profile that the Black Cats are looking for, given their relentless upcoming European schedule.

After a breakout season in the Italian topflight, Soulé helped Roma to a third place finish in the league, on top of a Europa League run that ended in the round of 16. Throughout his domestic and European campaigns last season, the Argentine demonstrated his versatility by frequently playing across the frontline and his high level of end product was clear as he averaged 0.25 goals per 90. Given his qualities, it is no surprise that the forward has attracted interest from a wide range of clubs.

Florent Ghisolfi is said to have asked about the availability of the South American sensation, and with the sporting director’s connection with the Italian club due to his previous spell there, a move to Wearside could be more likely than it seems. Soulé is also thought to favour a move to a European club, making the transfer more realistic. However, it won’t be an easy job, as the Black Cats face competition from fellow Premier League sides. Fulham, Bournemouth and Champions League outfit Aston Villa are all said to hold interest.

Roma are understood to be open to the departure of Soulé, providing a suitable offer comes in. While the club value the 22 year old’s potential, he is not viewed as a guaranteed starter next season. In fact, the Italian club are actively in the market for a winger, which could further hint that a departure could be close. As several clubs monitor him, Roma see an opportunity to secure a fee of around their £30m asking price in order to reshape their attack ahead of their Champions League campaign.

Whether the Black Cats choose to push forward and meet the Italian club’s asking price remains to be seen. However, given Sunderland’s ambitious project in recent years partnered with Europa League football on the horizon, the club are in a great position to strike if talks accelerate.
