Another outstanding signing for SAFC Women! 27-year-old defender/midfielder Jamie Finn has arrived in the north east to play for the Black Cats.
Jamie’s previous club (Birmingham city) finished 2nd in the WSL2 last season, and she has been playing for them for almost 3 years. But that’s not where her career began…
Finn is originally from Dublin, Ireland and started her youth career in 2006, playing for Swords Manor FC. She played with them until 2011 and moved onto Raheny United in 2015.
The defender stayed at Raheny United for less than a year before going to Shelbourne who have played in many leagues and cups. At the same time, she was in college in Florida, so played for a year with the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles where she made five appearances and collected a goal in that short period of time.
Unfortunately, Jamie wasn’t able to gain any minutes at either Raheny or Shelbourne, so once the opportunity to play for Birmingham City came around in 2021, she very quickly made her move there. Playing for Birmingham has given her career a sensational boost, with 56 appearances and a single goal. She has played for them ever since, until she made her move to the Black Cats on Thursday.
INTERNATIONAL CAREER
Finn’s international career started in 2013 when she started off by playing for the U17’s team. Then in 2015 she got moved up to the U19’s until 2017. In total, she achieved 22 caps and got a goal for each team.
From that point forward, Jamie was moved up to the Women’s Republic of Ireland senior team, where she has made 16 caps so far and is still waiting for her moment to score a goal.
Her first call-up by team coach Vera Pauw was for a UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 qualifier against Greece – 12th November 2019 (the match in which she was surprised to start in the starting XI).
In February 2024, the defender/midfielder tragically tore her ACL in Italy, on a training camp, which unfortunately meant that she hasn’t been called up since. But she is now fit and ready to play in red and white and hopefully gain more minutes for Ireland in the process.
