RLB POST LIVERPOOL

Regis Le Bris reflected on Sunderland's 2-4 defeat to Liverpool in our second pre-season fixture, the first in the USA. The scoreline isn't really a fair reflection on the game as we once again fielded two separate 11s, and the first half ended 1-1 with SAFC probably the better team.

GAME OF TWO HALVES

“Interesting, two different halves, we decided to split the gametime. For the first half I think we started with good intentions but conceded the first goal. We felt that we found the solution, either with or without the ball, and we were dominant. So, I am very happy with the first half. We feel we are getting better as a team with different intentions. We scored, which is always really important. It’s another 45 minutes to build the foundations.”

LEARNING CURVE FOR THE ACADEMY LADS

“For the second half, I think for our young lads it’s really interesting to experience those situations. You can tell them many things but until you do it on the pitch, even when it’s tough, you can’t build real experiences. That was the case this afternoon.”

ENZO GOAL AND INFLUENCE

“I think in this central corridor he is brilliant. He can connect really well with the two other midfielders, with freedom and mobility, and now the connection with the centre backs - or the goalkeeper - is getting better as well. After that he is creative and if he becomes decisive, it’s even more impactful for the game.”

WORLD CUP LADS COMING BACK

“It’s going to be positive because I feel that the first group worked really well and for the players who will now join, they will feel that the core of the squad is ready. They have to connect with us and I think their experience at the World Cup will be huge, and useful for the future.”

USA TRIP SO FAR

“Good. I think it’s interesting to be in a different country, to connect with the people around and to show them Sunderland. We still have good opponents so for the pre-season it’s important.”
