RLB DOES THE DOUBLE

Regis Le Bris shared his thoughts after securing yet another win against our North East neighbours. It's a league double this season meaning they haven't beaten us in the league since 2011.

GREAT WIN

“Massive achievement, winning two derbies in one year means a lot. We expected a high-intensity match and that was the case. The first half was balanced probably, but with a mistake we gave them the opportunity to score because they were not so dangerous, but it is what it is. The team reacted well and I think our second half was what we expected to do. We had composure, we were calm, we had character as well. We showed that we were able to play good football and create chances. Finally, we scored twice.”

PLAYER EMOTIONS

“I think they were okay but with a mistake, it is like a turning point in the game plan and that’s always the case. We tried to manage the expected, with preparation and a game plan, but the unexpected will happen. It came from us which is a shame but it is what it is. Sometimes it’s the reality of football because when you try something you can make mistakes. It’s acceptable and the reaction was really good. We stayed in the game and got to half time just 1-0 down because then you can manage the emotions and help them stay calm and patient.”

BIG CHARACTER NEEDED

“It was impressive. The players were really good because in these games you are always on the edge. We are talking about thin margins which can either go this way or the other way. But they stayed composed enough to stay in the game and find ways to create chances.”

DERBY DOUBLE

“I know it is really important for our fans, the club and the staff and everyone in the building. It’s massive and it’s a collective achievement. We need everyone involved in the process to get better and it’s a good turning point for our first year in the league, to say we can achieve many things if we stay connected.”

IMPORTANT TIMING

“It is key because during this period between the last international break to this one in March, it is long. We had AFCON with six players missing, that period was really demanding and I think those players involved at that moment pushed a bit too much and they were on the edge. Today we had six or seven injuries, which is massive, but the others stepped up and showed that they are ready to go when they have the opportunity.”

FANS

“This connection with our fans is really special. Day after day I understand even more the identity of the club and the way football matters to them. I am really proud that we achieved this victory at Newcastle because it shows we can be resilient and give them what they deserve.”
