POYET ON DERBY WINS

In the aftermath of Sunderland defeating Newcastle at St James' Park, Gus Poyet spoke about what it means to SAFC fans to get one over their local rivals. Regis Le Bris is the first Sunderland manager since Poyet to win his first two league matches over the Mags. Gus was speaking to Betwright who offer Premier League betting odds...

“You cannot imagine how much it means. I recently went to Sunderland for a fans’ forum and it was great to see the fans there. I told them the story that when I arrived in Sunderland as the coach after three or four days, I was driving home after a day on the training ground. A guy stopped next to me at the traffic lights, pulled his window down and shouted “hey, stay up and beat Newcastle! That’s all we want”. So, from the first minute you know what your job is. It’s incredible. You might think you know about it, but you don’t really know until you’re in. I was in and it’s tremendous. For both sets of fans those games are unique. If you win you are a hero and if you lose you are rubbish! It cannot be that bad, but that’s the way they live up there.”

The full interview with Poyet will be published in ALS 270, which is out for the Tottenham game.
