Sunderland won their 20th game of the season and first after the latest international break, defeating Alex Neil’s Millwall. On a slightly different day we could have easily scored at least one more, with their goalkeeper pulling off a few decent saves and us missing a penalty.
ANTHONY PATTERSON: 6.5/10
He wasn’t super busy today but pulled off two saves to deny efforts from inside the box and kept a clean sheet. His distribution wasn’t great and he was almost caught out in the first half after taking too long with the ball though.
ALAN BROWNE: 7/10
Browne did decently away from his natural position as a midfielder. I thought he made it tricky for them to get chances away down his side, aside from one ball towards the end of the first half.
CHRIS MEPHAM: 7.5/10
Coped well against a physical Millwall attack and contributed to the clean sheet massively by blocking a Mihailo Ivanovic effort at the death.
LUKE O’NIEN: 6/10
Defensively, he was fantastic but I have to lower his rating massively because he missed a penalty but also he’s the club captain so delegation of penalty duties is partly his responsibility. He should have let one of the attackers take it.
TRAI HUME: 8.5/10
Scored the sole goal of the match and contributed going forward throughout, he also had a decent effort in the second half. Maybe let them get crosses away on his side a bit too easily once or twice.
PATRICK ROBERTS: 7.5/10
Assisted the goal and very nearly scored himself from a difficult angle, denied by a good save. His contributions lessened as the game went on but a good shift from him.
DAN NEIL: 7/10
He battled well for the ball and helped out with our attacks well. I’ve knocked half a point off because he’s also partly responsible for penalty delegation as team captain, although whether he can overrule O’Nien I’m not entirely sure.
JOBE BELLINGHAM: 7.5/10
Did well with his midfield duties and got a few shots away throughout the game, very rarely got outfought for possession.
ROMAINE MUNDLE: 7.5/10
Mundle struggled to get the better of Tristan Crama for much of the first half but he had his two best efforts after the break and then won the penalty. I think he should have been allowed to take it.
CHRIS RIGG: 7/10
Not playing 90 minutes of Championship football due to the international fixtures definitely helped him today. He looked very lively in the first 45 especially and had a good chance in the first five minutes of the game.
WILSON ISIDOR: 6/10
I was going to give him a five because he didn’t contribute too greatly for most of the time he was on the pitch but he was very unlucky not to get on the scoresheet with that close range header, denied by goalkeeper Lukas Jensen.
SUBS:
ELIEZER MAYENDA: N/A
Played only a few minutes but looked bright.
TOMMY WATSON: N/A
Also only on the pitch for a matter of minutes, and while we were in defensive mode so he couldn't contribute a lot.
