Sunderland stretched their unbeaten record at the Stadium of Light to eleven games, drawing with 12 man Manchester City in a goalless affair. The result keeps us in the fight for European football at the halfway point in the season.
ROBIN ROEFS: 9.5/10
Made four saves, two of which were huge; one in the first half to deny Erling Haaland and one in the second to deny Josko Gvardiol. Also made a decent stop to deny Savinho.
LUTSHAREL GEERTRUIDA: 9/10
Physically imposing and ever present it seemed, defensively top notch. Passing a bit iffy at times but no major damage done.
NORDI MUKIELE: 9.5/10
Almost flawless, created a huge chance in the first half going forward and prevented Jeremy Doku from scoring with twenty minutes to go with a huge block. Absolutely brilliant, before, after and in between those moments too.
OMAR ALDERETE: 10/10
Probably his best game in a Sunderland shirt, although a few other performances cut it close (which says a lot about how good he is). One moment stood out, which was when he put in a last ditch tackle to take the ball away from Haaland late in the game.
DENNIS CIRKIN: 9/10
Fantastic from him, much improved from his last performance. Plenty of tackles and won plenty of fouls himself too. Going forward, he was missed once or twice when he could have been passed to.
TRAI HUME: 8.5/10
Defensively good, except maybe a bit weak once or twice. Did poorly with his header in first half stoppage time though.
GRANIT XHAKA: 9.5/10
Communicative, guiding some of the less experienced players around the pitch and good when we were under pressure. Going forward, he put the ball in for Hume’s header, so could have easily had another assist on his record tonight.
ENZO LE FEE: 9.5/10
One of a few of our players who have a claim for being our Man of the Match. Le Fee was critical towards the end, distributing the ball away from the box on multiple occasions to relieve the pressure. Really good in the air too and played his part in our attacking work.
SIMON ADINGRA: 6/10
He struggled a lot of the time and his decision making was a bit suspect. Missed a few chances to pass or shoot. Still, he was good at getting into those positions to mess it up in the first place. When you’re playing Man City, getting into the final third is hard enough.
ELIEZER MAYENDA: 9/10
One of our hardest working players, did really well to break away often. Got Nathan Ake booked he was causing so much trouble and forced a save from Gianluigi Donnarumma too. Perfectly complimented Brian Brobbey and then Wilson Isidor.
BRIAN BROBBEY: 7/10
Workmanlike, he did so well to get into the position for his effort in the first half. Really mucked it up afterwards though, taking too long to get the shot away. Wasn’t on the ball very often but wouldn’t expect him to be against a side of that quality.
SUBS:
WILSON ISIDOR: 7.5/10
Came on and had just two less touches than Brobbey did in half the amount of time. Had one effort from a difficult angle, after doing well to get into the position, perhaps should have done slightly better but that’s a bit harsh.
ROMAINE MUNDLE: 6/10
Stopped at one point when he should have taken it further forward. Not as bright as he has been in previous games on the ball.
