OTD: MICHUT SIGNS ON LOAN

On this day in 2022, Edouard Michut joined Sunderland on loan from Paris Saint-Germain until the end of the season. He was the second of the ‘teens in jeans’ to arrive at the club with Jewison Bennette signing a few days prior, then Abdoullah Ba and Amad Diallo completing there moves the following day.

Michut arrived with rather high expectations, coming from such a giant of a football club, with many tipping him to have a really high ceiling in the game. He joined Tony Mowbray’s side with an option to buy should the move be a success. He did have to wait a while before making his debut, having arrived at the club carrying an injury. He would eventually make his first appearance in Red and White as a second half substitute in a 0-0 draw at home to Blackpool.

After a couple more sub appearances he was again out injured, missing almost two months of action. He would return to the side with his first start in a 4-1 win against Wigan, which would be one of the more memorable games of that season. Hume’s crunching tackle on James McClean, Ellis Simms last goal for Sunderland, Diallo’s long-range beauty and the performances of Ba and Michut, who both impressed in what was the first real chance either had gotten from the start.

Michut was popular amongst fans, with his chant to Depeche Mode’s ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ one of the best we have had in recent years.

He scored his first goal for the club on the 15th March 2023 against Sheffield United, putting us 1-0 up with a tidy finish past Wes Foderingham into the Blades net in a game we would go onto lose 2-1.

Michut was always tidy but questions were raised if the buy option would be triggered come the end of the season.

After falling out of favour to Pierre Ekwah in the back end of the season, Kristian Speakman came out and said that "following a period of dialogue with the player and his representatives, all parties mutually agreed it was best to pursue other opportunities".

He would return to Paris, only to then be loaned out to Turkish side Adana Demirspor. After making 23 appearances in the first half of the season, he would have the move made permanent in January.

However, due to delay in payments, Michut terminated his contract in August 2024.

His next move would see him turn out for Dutch side Fortuna Sittard where he still plays today. He may have only been a Sunderland player for a year, and although maybe the hype around him was a bit over the top, the Frenchman was still a tidy footballer.
