This week, Sunderland unveiled their new home shirt for the 26/27 season and it pays homage to the famous 1937 side that won the Black Cats their first ever domestic trophy.
The 1937 FA Cup side came out victors against a formidable Preston North End side despite being 1-0 down at half time through Frank O’Donnel, the Black Cats, managed by Johnny Cochrane, turned the game on its head with three second half goals to earn them a historic victory. Goals from Bobby Gurney, the legendary local lad and captain Raich Carter and Eddie Burbanks saw Sunderland win their first FA Cup. The side also won the First Division Championship the year prior and have become legends to Sunderland fans even to this day.
Hummel’s latest home shirt is etched in historical value everywhere you look, blending the vintage look of the 1937 shirt with a modern 21st century look.
The shirt contains the famous red and white stripes that Sunderland have carried for over a century and a traditional white polo collar while a woven “S” is engraved into the pattern to replicate the shape of the handles of the FA Cup trophy.
In the collar the names of the starting XI that played in that legendary cup final victory to highlight the honour of playing for Sunderland and in memory of the heroes of those who wrote history for Wearside as Regis Le Bris side look to write their own history as they return to European football for the first time in over 50 years.
The design also contains a shield around the badge to mimic the crest of the 1937 badge while the old badge is also on the shirt on the back of the neck alongside a commemorative inscription.
The shirt was released on Wednesday and queues stretched around the stadium to get their hands on it, with the release being widely praised as it manages to blend the vintage and modern style brilliantly.
