MELKER ELLBORG: WHO ARE YOU?

Sunderland have completed their second signing of the January transfer window, bringing in 22-year-old Swedish goalkeeper Melker Ellborg for a fee of £3 million on a deal until the summer of 2030.

Born in Kalmar, Sweden, in 2003, he began his career in the academy of amateur outfit IFK Berga. Clearly miles ahead of his peers, he first trained with the men’s team at the age of just 12 before featuring in a senior friendly aged just 13. In 2019, he moved to the academy of Malmo FF. Ellborg’s competitive senior debut came during a loan spell to IFK Malmo in the Swedish third tier, making 14 appearances and keeping two clean sheets between February and October of 2022. The young goalkeeper was then loaned out again, this time to another third tier outfit in the form of Ariana, making another 12 appearances, in the 2023 season.

Next up, he upgraded to a loan spell in the Superettan, the second tier, but was mainly used as a backup for Trelleborgs FF, getting onto the pitch six times for his third temporary club. Still, this was enough to earn him a new four-year contract with his parent club in February 2025. 2025 became the shot stopper’s breakout year, with his debut for Malmo coming later in the same month he signed his new contract, in a Svenska Cupen game. Ellborg was afforded his league debut in May and kept three clean sheets in a run of six Allvenskan matches before being placed back onto the bench. He did also get to play in the Swedish Cup final too, helping to keep the match goalless after extra time but his team were undone in the penalty shootout against BK Hacken. Overall, there were a very impressive six clean sheets in just nine appearances that season for Malmo.

So far this season, he’s played pretty much exclusively in the European competitions due to the fact the Swedish league doesn’t get started until late February. He made two appearances in the first round of Champions League qualifying and made another five appearances in the Europa League league stage, including against Premier League side Nottingham Forest.

I think it’s pretty clear that Melker Ellborg is seen as the long term replacement for Robin Roefs, he’s got a similar profile in terms of his experience level as Roefs and is slightly younger. We’ve paid a small fee for his services but it still makes him the most expensive goalkeeper outgoing in Swedish league history. Seven clean sheets in 17 appearances for his old club is a very positive record too.

Upon joining the club Ellborg had this to say: “It feels amazing to have signed for this Club. The past few days have been enjoyable, from learning about the interest, getting to know the Club and the people, and finalising the move. The Club has had an excellent season so far, and I’m incredibly happy to be part of this journey. I’m aware of Sunderland’s history, and it means a lot to be part of something with such a rich tradition. I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone at the Stadium of Light on Monday and hopefully playing in front of the fans soon.”

Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman added this: “Melker has enjoyed a very positive season in Sweden, breaking into the starting XI and producing standout performances in the Allsvenskan and the Europa League. Physically strong, he has the athleticism of a modern goalkeeper and is calm and composed in possession. Melker has a lot of potential, and we believe he is ready to take this step and join our squad. We are very much looking forward to working with him.”
