LUCUMI ON THE MOVE?

Sunderland are one of several clubs to have expressed interest in Colombia international Jhon Lucumi. The 28-year-old centre back has been a consistent performer for Italian side Bologna, as he helped them to a fifth place finish that would secure Champions League football for his team in the 2023/24 season. Calm and comfortable on the ball, Lucumi has earned himself a reputation as a composed and reliable defender and as such has become a potential transfer option for teams playing at a high level across Europe.

In the 2025/26 season, the Colombian has asserted himself as one of the most dominant defenders in Serie A, winning an outstanding 72.7% of his aerial duels per 90, a level of success that places him amongst the top centre backs in the Italian top flight. He fits the bill for everything Regis Le Bris looks for in a central defender, offering composure on the ball, alongside his strength in duels. With the Black Cats facing European fixtures, which are sure to test our squad depth, it isn’t hard to understand why the Bologna man has become a top target for Sunderland. 

Understandably, Lucumi has attracted interest from other clubs, especially after his standout performances at the 2026 World Cup. The defender has caught the eye of a number of Europe’s elite, including Inter Milan, Juventus and Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest. It has been reported that the Colombian’s release clause of €28 million is set to expire soon, making him a much cheaper alternative to the seemingly Leeds-bound centre back Tarik Muharemović, who the Black Cats were said to have held interest in.

With Bologna failing to qualify for Europe, and the Colombian defender’s contract said to expire in June 2027, the Italian side may feel the need to secure a fee for Lucumi before he has the opportunity to leave as a free agent. Above all, the Colombian international’s departure relies heavily on the assumption The Red and Blues can get a replacement through the door, meaning Sunderland will likely have to remain patient as the situation develops. If the stars align however, the Black Cats will have a fantastic opportunity to add more European pedigree and top flight experience to their squad.
