Izzy Atkinson becomes the 6th signing for the lasses in red and white this summer.
The 24-year old winger was born in Dublin, Ireland and started off playing for Shelbourne, before moving to Celtic in the Scottish Women’s Premier League for the 21-22 season. Her WSL journey began back in 2022 when she joined West Ham United and during her time there she made 21 appearances and scored 1 goal for the club.
Izzy joins us from recently relegated Crystal Palace and brings a wealth of experience, having played in the 24/25 WSL season with them.
Despite relegation, Akinson has come to Wearside with experience of being promoted and is eager to make that happen with us at the end of this season.
Izzy said: “I’m absolutely delighted to join Sunderland. This feels like a fresh start for me, and I’m ready to hit the ground running. The last time I played in this league, I got promoted, and I know how competitive and demanding it is. I want to bring that experience here and contribute in every way I can, on the pitch and around the team’’
The winger also has some national team experience with the Republic of Ireland (24 caps), and was called up for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Senior Squad in 2017 at just 16-years old. Izzy obtained her first senior cap in a 3-1 win over Portugal (in a friendly) as a 90th-minute substitute.
