EXPERT'S VIEW ON LUCUMI

ree

With Sunderland upping their interest in Bologna defender Jhon Lucumi, we asked Italian football journalist Daniele Fischella for some information on our transfer target.

Since Jhon joined Bologna they have managed to win their first piece of silverware in 51 years last season. How integral to Bologna's Coppa Italia winning campaign was Lucumi?

Last season, Jhon Lucumi was pivotal for Bologna, starting all five Coppa Italia matches and featuring, from the first minute, in 29 Serie A games, only missing a couple due to suspension. His performances have been integral to Bologna’s success under both Thiago Motta and Vincenzo Italiano.

What are Lucumi's biggest strengths?

Lucumi excels in ball-carrying, game-reading, and anticipating opponents' moves, which has enabled the Rossoblú to control the tempo and impose their style of play. Standing tall and strong, he is rarely beaten in one-on-one situations—only being dribbled past 12 times in Serie A last season—and is proficient in aerial duels.

His playmaking skills are evidenced by his status as Bologna’s most accurate passer last season. Even in risky situations, he seeks out teammates to maintain possession.

When he first joined the Serie A from the Belgian division did it take him long to settle?

Though his first Serie A season saw him concede four penalties, he has since refined his game. After overcoming a thigh injury early in 2023/24 Lucumi played a key role in Bologna securing the league’s third-best defensive record and an historic Champions League qualification.

Based on what you've seen from him, do you think he can cut it in the Premier League?

An elegant and quick defender, Lucumi should adapt well to the Premier League, thanks to his physical attributes.
